In the News: Driver defeats Fisher in Commissioners Court race

BELTON — Democrat John Driver on Tuesday easily defeated Republican incumbent John Fisher for the Precinct 4 seat on the Bell County Commissioners Court.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Driver won 61 percent to Fisher’s 39 percent, ending the GOP’s one-party rule of the Commissioners Court.

Driver is a man with two firsts. He is the first black person to serve on the Commissioners Court since Bell County’s founding in 1850, according to the local Democratic Party. And he is the first Democrat elected to the county’s five-person decision making body in 20 years.

“I feel great. We just want to make sure the numbers hold from today’s election and if everything keeps going the way it is it’s going to be a great night,” Driver said as votes continued to be reported. “Bell County will get a new, fresh look.”
